About

Painting

Study painting in the spacious, newly -renovated, non-toxic painting studio with wood shop and stunning views of the Gila Wilderness! The beginning painting class, Painting I, focuses on foundations including mark making, canvas stretching, surface preparation, stretcher bar building, observational painting, color mixing in water-soluble oils as well as basic color theory. Painting II students are introduced to categories relevant to contemporary painting and explore these categories in their own work. Emphasis is placed on experimentation of painting techniques and media and exploring these conceptual frameworks (categories) while developing a comprehension of contemporary paintings in relationship to the canon of art history. Representational, abstract and non -objective painting are explored. In Painting III, students begin developing an idiosyncratic way of making sophisticated paintings, through provided prompts or in response to their own interests/research, that works towards furthering the dialog of contemporary painting and visual culture. In Painting IV and beyond, students are encouraged to develop a cohesive, sophisticated body of work to prepare students for life as a professional artist.
